Belgaum
Belgaum: The Athani taluk unit of Belgaum Jilla Raitha Hitharakshana Samiti has questioned the existence of Command Area Development Authority of Malaprabha-Ghataprabha Projects and alleged that CADA authorities had ignored the problems of growers from the command area. The samiti members, who arrived from Athani and Raibag, 100 to 145 km from here, staged a dharna in front of CADA office on Friday. They demanded that CADA Administrator M.N. Vijaykumar appear before them. They said Mr. Vijaykumar was not available in the office for four months and the problems of farmers were going unheard. Samiti leaders Mallikarjun and Parashuram Lingappa said large tracts of agricultural lands in Athani and Raibag taluks of Belgaum district and Jamkhandi in Bagalkot district had been destroyed because of water-logging from the backwaters of Hippargi barrage since 2005. Farmers had brought their problems to the notice of Mr. Vijaykumar for several times in vain. The samiti members took the deputy administrator S.P. Shettannavar to task and grilled him over negligent attitude of the CADA authorities.
