NEW DELHI: A court here on Friday convicted Romesh Sharma, alleged aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, for evading Rs. 50 crore in income tax.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kanwaljeet Arora convicted Sharma under Sections 276-C (2) and 277 of the Income Tax Act. The quantum of sentence is likely to be pronounced on Monday.
According to the prosecution, Sharma had not deposited his dues despite sufficient reminders by the Income Tax Department. In 1987-88, the overdue tax amount was Rs.2.47 crore, while in 1988-89 it was Rs.21 lakh and in 1989-90 he was to have paid Rs.25 lakh to the Income Tax Department. However, he did not pay these dues as well as others leading to cases being registered against him.
Charges proved
The court said the prosecution had proved the charges against Sharma beyond reasonable doubt.
Sharma is facing prosecution in several criminal cases and has also been convicted of the murder of his girlfriend Kunjum Budhiraja. He is also facing prosecution in a money laundering case.
