Were officials tipped off?
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Was there a leak in the information about the raids conducted by Lokayukta police on Thursday?
This question did the rounds on Thursday when Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde was addressing a press conference to announce the result of the raids conducted on offices and residences of seven government officials, who were accused of amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income. This was because of the fact that some reporters got telephone calls about the possibility of raids on Wednesday night.
Referring to this point, Mr. Hegde said: “You may be wondering the reason why we have not recovered cash from the officials … Corrupt officials will always have threat of raid. It is natural that they will not keep movables and cash with them.”
Mr. Hegde went on: “I have received calls asking me to stop action … they even state that the official is innocent.”
Additional Director-General of Police (Lokayukta) Rupak Kumar Dutta said the raids were conducted by maintaining secrecy. Mr. Dutta said he would find out if there was any leak in the information about the raid “which are carried out with a lot of care and caution”.
