Staff Reporter
‘Writings of the revolutionary poet impacted an entire generation’
NEW DELHI: A special postage stamp commemorating the noted Urdu poet Asrar-Ul-Haq “Majaaz” was released by Vice-President Hamid Ansari here on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ansari said all his contemporaries would surely have read and recited the lyrics and poems of Majaaz. “He was a revolutionary poet and his writings impacted an entire generation. His poems were full of romance and revolution. It is indeed commendable that the Postal Department has brought out a commemorative postage stamp as well as a first day cover on him,” he added.
Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Shakeel Ahmed said it was a fundamental responsibility of the Department to honour illustrious personalities of the country and that more such stamp series would soon be released.
The Vice-President presented a set of the stamps to Majaaz’s sister Hamida Saleem and to the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, P. K. Abdul Azis.
Popular poet and Majaaz’s nephew Javed Akhtar and his wife Shabana Azmi were among those present on the occasion.
