dated March 29, 1958: Soviet leadership

Mr. Nikita Khrushchev on March 27 took over the Soviet Premiership in place of Marshal Nikolai Bulganin – while retaining the still more important post of Communist Party Secretary. The new appointment for the most powerful figure in modern Russia was announced at the sitting of the Supreme Soviet in the Kremlin by Marshal Voroshilov, who was himself re-elected Soviet President. The replacement of Marshal Nikolai Bulganin as Soviet Prime Minister is the sixth major shake-up in the Soviet leadership since Stalin died five years ago. These five years have brought purges, demotions, even executions, of former top leaders.
