Sixth Pay Commission

This refers to the editorial “Narrowing the gap” (March 27). There is no gainsaying that there is a need to bridge the gap between the pay packages of employees in the government and the private sector. Youngsters do not want to take up government jobs because they get lucrative salaries in the private sector. It is extremely important to attract and retain talent in the public sector. The proposed hike in the salaries of the Central government staff is welcome.

Ambika Gupta,

New Delhi

Without doing something about the very high levels of corruption and the low level of productivity resulting in millions of avoidable governmental jobs, and without putting in place a hire-and-fire policy, it is meaningless to hike the salary of the babus by as much as 40 per cent.

R.P. Rammohan,

Hyderabad

The Sixth Pay Commission’s recommendation that staggered working hours and child care leave be provided to women with minor children is laudable. This and six months’ maternity leave, if granted, will inspire more women to take up employment.

The Pay Commission’s suggestion, if implemented, will be a blessing to all young working mothers. They can take better care of their children and home, and the stress on them will decrease considerably.

Ramya Hariharan,

Dindigul

Modern women do not want to waste their education and skills. The government can start providing for part-time jobs of four-five hours’ duration in the morning, afternoon and evening.

Women can choose their time of work, depending on the support system at home. The four-hour schedule is easier to organise, administer, and execute. It will also guarantee efficiency for the employer and the employee.

Rameeza A. Rasheed,

Chennai
