PALAKKAD: The Estimates Committee of the Kerala Legislative Assembly on tourism development has suggested single administrative control for the Malampuzha Garden and tourism centre. Talking to mediapersons after a sitting of the committee here on Friday, its chairman Anathalavattam Anandan said the lack of co-ordination between the Irrigation Department and the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) had affected the development of the destination. He said there was a decline in the number of tourists visiting Malampuzha and the earning from it since 2001. Earlier, more than 13 lakh people used to visit Malampuzha annually. But this has declined and there is a fall of 23 per cent in the earning, he added. The committee will examine whether a Malampuzha Development Authority should be formed to co-ordinate the departments concerned. While taking steps to provide adequate protection to the dam, steps should also be taken to provide more facilities for tourists, Mr. Anandan said. He said the committee will meet Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who represents the Malampuzha Assembly constituency and Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan in this regard. He said Palakkad had very good natural spots that could be developed as tourism centres. 7The Committee directed the DTPC to come up with new tourism projects as enough funds were available from the Centre and the State governments. Besides Mr. Anandan, the sitting was attended by N. Anirudhan, K.V. Kunhiraman, A.C. Moideen, P. Viswam and Ramachandran Kadannappally.
