PT plans stir for rain-hit farmers

Staff Reporter

Demands Rs. 30,000 as relief

“The government’s announcement of giving Rs. 3,000 an acre was nothing but mocking at farmers”

TIRUNELVELI: The Puthiya Thamizhagam has threatened to launch an intensive struggle from Monday if the State Government failed to announce within next 48 hours a compensation of Rs. 30,000 to each flood-affected farmer.

Speaking to reporters here on Friday after some of the flood-affected paddy fields in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin districts, its president K. Krishnasamy said that even as each farmer had suffered a loss of over Rs. 1.50 lakh owing to the recent rain and subsequent floods, the government’s announcement of giving Rs. 3,000 an acre was nothing but mocking at the entire farming community.

“Even after a tragedy has hit the southern parts of the State really hard, the official machinery, which normally wakes up aggressively at the time of distress, is yet to act positively. Hence we’ve decided to mobilise the farmers against the government for a decisive struggle if the Tamil Nadu Government fails to announce a compensation of Rs. 20,000 per acre as interim relief and Rs. 30,000 to all flood-hit farmers within next 48 hours,” Dr. Krishnasamy said.

As per his struggle plan, the protestors will lay siege to all revenue offices, right from the offices of Village Administrative Officers to District Revenue Officer, during the first phase of the struggle with the slogan: “Do something for the farmers or quit the office.”

“We’ll lock all these revenue offices if the government refuses to announce this compensation package even after our struggle and a bandh will also be conducted in the southern districts in the next stage,” he said.
