N. Korea threatens non-cooperation

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: North Korea on Friday warned that it might stop disabling its nuclear facilities at Yongbyon if the United States were to stay its current “unreasonable” course in the denuclearisation of the peninsula. Pyongyang issued this threat after test-firing several short-range missiles at sea.

North Korea’s state news agency quoted a Foreign Ministry official as saying the country “has never enriched uranium,” contrary to the efforts of the U.S. to “cook up fictions.” Washington’s move to “delay the settlement of the nuclear issue,” through such tactics, “will seriously affect the disabling of nuclear facilities which has been under way so far with a great deal of effort.”

Dispute

These comments punctuate the ongoing dispute over Washington’s insistence that Pyongyang render “a complete and correct declaration” as agreed to.
