To discuss effective use of Oriya in offices Concern over serious threat on the language BHUBANESWAR: In an attempt to formulate a strategy for promotion of Oriya language, the State-owned two-year-old Odia Bhasa Pratisthan (Institute of Oriya Language) would host a two-day national workshop in the capital commencing on April 5. One of the major objectives of the meet is a deliberate discussion on effective use of Oriya language in government offices, explained an official. StatusIt would further examine the status of teaching of Oriya in schools and discuss the role of Oriya mass media in promotion of the language. Besides, the experts would look into the various regional dialects prevalent in the State and discuss development of tools for promotion of the mother tongue and explore possibilities of collaborating with institutions having a similar mission, he elaborated. The workshop would have some delegates from different parts of the country who have expertise in the field besides several from within the State, the hosts revealed. In view of the rapid invasion of English language into public life, the prospect of Oriya language is facing a serious threat. Thus the thrust has been on exploring all avenues to preserve and promote the language in its pure form, they explained. Apart from dwelling on the language issue, the workshop would devote a session for discussion of the future course of action of the institute, it was learnt.
