PJR’s son taken into preventive custody

Staff Reporter

Supporters ‘damage’ RTC buses

HYDERABAD: Supporters of former MLA P. Janardhan Reddy’s son Vishnuvardhan Reddy allegedly damaged four buses in city on Friday when police took him into preventive custody during a protest programme at Begumbazar.

Reddy, along with 20 followers, staged a sit-in at Bheemrao slum adjacent to Gandhi Bhavan in protest against the Government issuing evacuation notices to the locals. The slum land was allotted to the Gandhi Bhavan - the Congress party office-to facilitate its expansion and construction of a new building.

The slum dwellers were being allotted alternative sites. However, late PJR had opposed the decision to evacuate the locals.

Around 4 p.m. on Friday, the Hyderabad district revenue officials, accompanied by a huge contingent of policemen, arrived at the slum to serve evacuation notices to the residents.

On learning this, the locals gathered in large numbers preventing the officials entering their streets. Mr. Reddy too rushed there with his supporters and picked up an argument with the officials condemning their decision. Meanwhile, the police took Mr. Reddy, another Congress leader Niranjan and their supporters and shifted them to Gandhinagar police station.

As the news of the former MLA’s son spread, their supporters damaged three RTC buses at Khairatabad and another at Yosufguda by pelting stones at them.

Another group of his followers staged demonstration at Kukatpally junction condemning his preventive arrest.

Even after Mr. Reddy and his supporters were whisked away, the locals continued their protests and tore off the notices pasted on their houses by the revenue officials.
