The Coimbatore City Police are planning to revive its Mounted Horse Branch

very soon.

The City Police had a Mounted Horse Branch with a sanctioned strength of 10 horses. It was closed on September 2, 2006 owing to various extraneous reasons. The police resorted to mercy killing of one of the horses because of its sickness. Two others died because of age and health failure. Seven others were handed over to the People for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Now a proposal has been sent to the Director General of Remount Veterinary Quartermaster, General Branch, at R.K. Puram in New Delhi for buying six horses.

The Government has allocated Rs. 7.53 lakh for the purpose.

The Director General has replied that at present there were no horses available and that the situation would improve by May 2008. Coimbatore is likely to get the horses by May or June. A training programme will be conducted after the horses arrive for the animals and their handlers, City Police Commissioner K.C. Mahali says.

The Mounted Horse Branch will be useful at VOC Park, Race Course and at busy shopping areas since horses can reach even lanes and bylanes with ease. Maintaining the horses and stable will not be a major problem, since the police personnel are experienced.
