NEW DELHI: With the inflation rate touching a 13-month high of 6.68 per cent and with several States expected to go to polls later in the year, United Progressive Alliance partners have begun exerting pressure on the Congress to address the issue in all seriousness. Railway Minister Lalu Prasad called on UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi here on Friday and urged her to convene a meeting of the UPA to discuss the issue. He told Ms. Gandhi that even if international prices of petroleum were impacting domestic prices, the issue must be discussed and addressed. Admitting that the sudden spurt in inflation was matter of “concern,” Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said the Centre was taking steps and blamed the States for not taking enough action.
