NEW DELHI: The Centre has identified the locations for 14 world-class universities and 16 Central universities in States which do not have one. The world-class universities will come up in or near selected large cities to ensure connectivity and infrastructure back-up, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh said on Friday. These universities will be located in Pune, Kolkata, Coimbatore, Mysore, Visakhapatnam, Gandhinagar, Jaipur, Patna, Bhopal, Kochi, Amritsar, Bhubaneswar, Greater Noida and Guwahati. While 13 new Central universities would be set up, the government also decided to take over Dr. Hari Singh Gaur University in Sagar (Madhya Pradesh), Guru Ghasidas University in Bilaspur (Chhattisgarh) and Goa University and convert them into Central universities. The establishment of the new IITs, IIMs and universities was subject to the State governments offering land free of cost, Mr. Singh said. The intake would be 2,500 in each IIT and 120 in each IIM. Admission to the proposed IITs in Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar would begin this year itself, but since the institutions were yet to come up, they would be affiliated to the IITs in Chennai, Delhi and Kanpur respectively.
