‘Congress is ‘A’ team of CPI(M)’

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said here on Friday that the Congress had become the ‘A’ team of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Speaking at a rally of the employees of the Kolkata Corporation, she said when her party was formed in 1998 “we had described the Congress as the CPI(M)’s ‘B’ team. But, after the recent Rajya Sabha elections, it was clear that the Congress has become its ‘A’ team.”

An Independent defeated the Trinamool nominee with the support of both the Left Front and the Congress in the elections to the Upper House held here on March 26.

Ms. Banerjee ruled out having any truck with the Congress in the coming panchayat polls.

“Election after election, we have been trying to forge a ‘mahajot’ [grand alliance] with the Congress against the CPI(M)-led Left Front. But our moves have been aborted as the Congress and the CPI(M) are engaged in a joint venture.”
