KOLKATA: For the first time since the formation of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1964, veteran leader Jyoti Basu will be staying back at home on health grounds and not attending the party Congress that begins in Coimbatore on Saturday. “I am feeling very bad [at not being able to attend] and am sending a message instead. The party believes in collective leadership but all individuals concerned have a role to play …. The party Congress will be addressing what we have been able to achieve and what we have not,” Mr. Basu told a local television channel. It telecast his statement on Friday. Look into weaknesses“There is need to look into our weaknesses both within the party and the organisation. I believe that what the people want is that capitalists should not be allowed to have the last say in a civilisation and we cherish the dream of a society without classes and exploitation. It will take us time to make such a dream a reality and for that we will have to strengthen the party,” he said. “He is saddened. But, at the same time, feels heartened that the moment has arrived for holding such a major event of the party, one that comes every three years,” a close aide of Mr. Basu told The Hindu.
