AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi arriving at the J.N. Tata Auditorium for an interaction with young professionals, in Bangalore on Friday. BANGALORE: AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Friday called upon the youth to join politics to serve society and also to cleanse political field. “Look beyond your profession. Society is much bigger. Successful young professionals should enter politics,” Mr. Gandhi said while participating at an interaction with young professionals from various fields as part of the workshop on “Youth – India’s future”, in Bangalore. He asked the young professionals to shun inhibitions about political field. “Do not brush aside all the politicians. There are some good and committed politicians, who are as hardworking as you are in your profession,” he said and appealed to them not to get confined to just their profession. However, some of the participants, who spoke to presspersons, said they were not convinced that a good professional could survive in today’s politics. A young lawyer said that during interaction he had asked Mr. Gandhi if there was scope for young and mid-career professionals taking to part-time politics. “We want to earn our livelihood through our profession even if we join politics to serve society,” he told presspersons. Another young participant, a software professional, said: “Mr. Gandhi spoke about politics and several related issues. But, it is not my subject…” However, several participants appreciated his concern though they had reservations about joining politics by shunning their profession. About 700 young professionals and students attended the interaction. Strict security arrangements were in place near the venue of the interaction programme and even the media was kept out of the programme.
