Roads over four storm water drains proposed

Staff Reporter

There is also a plan to build three elevated road corridors

Underpasses at 46 intersections proposed

Pedestrian subways to be built at

36 locations

Bangalore: In a bid to decongest the roads, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in its budget for 2008-09 has proposed to build 16.7 km of road over the four main storm water drains, besides constructing three elevated road corridors of 14.9 km.

The four roads over storm water drains are from K.H. Road to Inner Road of Koramangala (5.1 km); from Old Madras Road to Airport Road in Challaghatta Valley (2.7 km); from Airport Road to Bellandur Tank in Challaghatta Valley (4.2 km) and from Outer Ring Road to Raja Canal STP of Hebbal Valley (2.7 km). These roads would be constructed under the Swiss challenge method.

Elevated corridors

An elevated road corridor of 10.2 km would be built from Sirsi Circle to Kengeri on the existing road to ensure smooth flow of traffic for vehicles going towards Mysore and entering the city from the Mysore side. For this purpose, Rs 15 crore has been earmarked as initial allocation.

Another elevated corridor is being proposed from Rajajinagar Entrance to Yeshwantpur junction. This signal-free elevated corridor of 3.2 km will be built on the existing road (Rajkumar Road), and for this purpose the BBMP has provided Rs. 15 crore.

The third elevated corridor would be built using steel structure from Minerva Circle to Hudson Circle along J.C Road.

With the construction of the elevated structure, this stretch would become bi-directional instead one-way at present. The BBMP has earmarked Rs. 20 crore for this 1.5 km project.

Underpasses

After getting a good response to its “magic box’ underpass built at Cauvery junction, the BBMP has proposed to build such underpasses at 46 intersections across the city, and for this purpose Rs. 50 crore has been earmarked.

Prominent places identified for constructing underpasses are Kanakapura-Ring Road junction, J.P Nagar, Banneraghatta Road, Kamakya theatre, Shivananda Store, Racecourse, Lalbagh-Siddaiah Road near Urvashi theatre, and Nayandahalli bus stop junction.

Pedestrian subways

Pedestrian subways would be built at 36 locations with the pre-cast technology used to construct the magic box underpasses. They have been proposed at Cauvery Bhavan, Lalbagh main gate, K.G. Road (near Arya Bhavan), Tumkur Road (near RNS Motors), J.C Road (Ravindra Kalakshetra), Racecourse Road (near Chalukya Hotel), Airport Road (near Marathahalli junction), Palace Road (near Mount Carmel College) and near Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan.

Skywalks

In addition to pedestrian sub-ways, skywalks with citizen friendly escalators would be built at 36 other locations under the Build-Own-Operate scheme. Meanwhile, 1,100 new bus shelters would also be constructed under the BOT system.

It has been proposed in the budget to construct road over bridges and road under bridges, in collaboration with the Railways, across railway lines at Hoodi Devasandra, Allalasandra, Bapujinagar pipeline road, Jalahalli MES, Virupakshapura, Srirampuram and Gangappa-Narasimhaiah compound in Binnypet.
