Six lakh saplings to be planted in Pudukottai

PUDUKOTTAI: Six lakh saplings of various trees will be planted in the district during 2008-09 to increase forest cover, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathy has said.
Participating in a function organised by the Forest Department to mark ‘World Forest Day’ here on Friday, Mr. Regupathy said two lakh casuarina saplings and four lakh saplings of other species would be planted in various parts of the district through a special drive. The district accounted for a poor forest cover of 5.19 per cent, with just 24,103 hectares accounting for forest area out of its total geographical extent of 4.64 lakh hectares.
On the special programme for tree cultivation on private lands, the Minister said about two lakh saplings were planted in various parts of the district. The species included 1.24 lakh eucalyptus saplings, 50,000 casuriana and 20,450 teak. There was overwhelming response from private tree growers to the State government’s permission to cultivate teak trees.
Mr. Regupathy said the country’s forest cover, which stood at 19.57 per cent in 1987, rose to 23.4 per cent by 2005-end. It had been planned to step up the nation’s forest area by 30 per cent by 2012 AD.
The Minister gave away incentives totalling Rs.16.71 lakh to 173 persons, who had grown trees on their lands.
District Forest Officer A. Somasundaram and Pudukottai Municipality Chairperson U. Ramathilagam were among those who spoke at the function.
