Teacher gets a touching farewell

Abdul Latheef Naha

Former students, many of them professionals, attend his last class

Much revered: V.S. Sasibhooshan Nair takes his last class at Calicut University on Saturday.

MALAPPURAM: V.S. Sasibhooshan Nair, outgoing Head of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Calicut University, was bestowed a rare honour on Saturday by his former students who attended his last class.

Many of them were professionals from various media and related industries. The alumni of the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication attended the 100-minute lecture along with the current batch of students. Screening the world-famous movie ‘Baraka’ by Ron Fricke, which speaks of a great theme with a collection of expertly photographed scenes from 22 countries, Mr. Nair explained to the class how visual meaning was evolved. “The effort is to communicate the meaning, and not the idea,” he said.

“I am honoured,” Mr. Nair said soon after the class in an emotion-filled voice. Soon after the lecture, he was surrounded led by dozens of students who had come down from Chennai, Bangalore and Delhi to bid him farewell. “We came here not just to wish him adieu, but to show that there was a large group of students on whom Mr. Nair had made a lasting impression,” said R.K. Radhakrishnan, former president of the Mass Communication Alumni Association (MASCAA), who came from Chennai. Other teachers said no other teacher who retired from Calicut University had been given such a touching farewell.

Subhash Kuttan, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Kerala University, said Mr. Nair was a teacher who did not care for posts. Syed Amjed Ahmed, Director of the Educational Multi Media Research Centre, Calicut University, described Mr. Nair as the ‘Dronacharya’ of editing.
