Additional platform and amenities for Pudukottai

Staff Reporter

Platform may be extended for 24-coach trains

Total development outlay: Rs.5.5 crore

Second phase at outlay of Rs.2 crore in progress

PUDUKOTTAI: Pudukottai Railway Station will soon get an additional platform and other basic amenities under the third phase of development. The station, with three platforms, will get a fourth one.

The station will also get drinking water and toilets, Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said speaking to reporters after inspecting the station for about an hour on Friday.

Mr. Velu said that the total outlay for developing the station in three phases had touched Rs.5.5 crore.

While Rs.1.5 crore had already been spent in the first phase, work on the second phase at an outlay of Rs. 2 crore was in progress.

Mr. Velu, who inspected the first platform, said that it could now accommodate trains with 18 to 20 compartments. If necessary, the length of the platform would be extended to facilitate operation of express trains with 24 compartments.

In reply to a question on the inconvenience being experienced by the passengers due to the absence of toilets in the diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU) trains on the Tiruchi–Karaikudi section, he said that the DEMUs had other advantages, in terms of speed and capacity.

The train halted for a while at select stations for the benefit of the passengers.

Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathy and Divisional Railway Manager Madurai Hemanthkumar were among those present during the inspection.
