‘It will help them keep abreast of the latest techniques in farming’ DAVANGERE: The Davangere Zilla Panchayat has plans to provide basic computer education to farmers at the gram panchayat level so that they could get information on agriculture, research in agriculture and marketing of farm produce on the Internet, said Nijalingappa, Chief Executive Officer of the panchayat. Participating in a workshop on seed production here, Mr. Nijalingappa said that farmers could not afford to be illiterate any more and they should have some knowledge to access to the Net. Hence, the panchayat was planning to train farmers at the gram panchayat level on using the Net. It also planned to allow farmers to use computers at the gram panchayat offices for certain hours. There had been new research in farming, seed production and related aspects. There was an urgent need for farmers to get themselves updated with the latest developments and techniques in agriculture. Farmers in western countries were not illiterate unlike in India and they studied the market and sold their commodities in a professional way getting good returns. Deputy Commissioner M.B. Dyaberi called upon farmers to use only certified seeds for getting good yield and asked the departments concerned to prevent selling of “uncertified low quality seeds” in the market.
