HYDERABAD: The State government will deploy the latest software in ‘iris’ technology, which it acquired two days ago, to weed out bogus ration cards, said Civil Supplies Minister Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy. He told the Legislative Council during Question Hour on Saturday that the software would be extensively used to check irregularities in the distribution of ration cards. The government had issued 1.8 crore cards based on ‘iris’ recognition, a biometric security system, to authenticate the identities of people. A Designated Photo Location (DPL) centre would be set up in every revenue division headquarters to verify the cards. Commercial Taxes Minister Konathala Ramakrishna said in response to a different question that the government was studying exemption from Value Added Tax sought by film producers when they leased out or sold the rights of their films for screening in theatres and telecast. They were presently paying VAT at the rate of 12.5 per cent. He said the government would study the tax collected from film producers in other States before taking a decision.
