Rifle drill captivates audience

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: In a display of teamwork, precision and discipline on Friday, a batch of 16 newly inducted Airmen of the Indian Air Force (IAF) made a demonstration of a rifle drill that left the audience spellbound.

After a passing out parade at IAF Station, Tambaram, 510 young men were inducted as Airmen. The Airmen belonged to Workshop and Mechanical Training Institutes and underwent 36 weeks of rigorous training.

The passing-out parade was followed by rifle drill by 16 of the passing out Airmen and formed part of the Air Warrior Drill Team. With .303 drill practice rifles in their hand, the team demonstrated rhythmic and synchronised drill movements. They flung rifles in the air with as much ease as they caught them.

The criss-cross movements, swirling of rifles and passing them around left the audience wondering if the Airmen were in possession of a feather weight instrument. The drill lasted 15 minutes and when they marched out of the parade ground briskly, they were given loud applause.

The 16 Airmen were led by Ground Training Instructor Corporal Ketha Ramkumar. During one of the drill movements, Mr. Ramkumar walked through a row of the Airmen who flung the rifles to those in the opposite row. Mr. Ramkumar along with Warrant Officer A.B.Pathak and Master Warrant Officer M.S.Sodhi had been training the Airmen for three months.

Flying Officer Mihir Mehta said the objective behind the drill was to inculcate a sense of team work, discipline and precision. Senior officers said the rifle drill team was originally performed by the U.S. Air Force. It was the first time that passing-out Airmen demonstrated the rifle drill, officers said. They said that unlike routine drills, during passing-out parades, the rifle drill involved “lagathaar kavaayat” (arms drill command). The Airmen responded to the continuous hissing of the team leader, they said.

There were plans to make the Airmen perform in schools and colleges to create interest among students in joining the IAF, officers said. Earlier, Air Commodore T.K. Varma, Air Officer Commanding, reviewed the parade and distributed trophies to the winners.
