THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Hind Mazdur Sabha (HMS) national president Thampan Thomas has demanded that the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission be applied to all sectors of employment. Addressing a news conference here on Saturday, Mr. Thomas said the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission, particularly that for 40 per cent increase in wages, showed great amount of social commitment on the part of the Commission and should be used as the basic norm for revising the wages of all categories of regular employees in government and private sectors in view of the increase in prices and the overall growth of the national economy. Laudable measuresThe decision to reduce the number of grades and provide Rs.1,000 to Rs.5,000 for children’s education and hostel feels were laudable measures, he added. Mr. Thomas said sale of land owned by public sector units was equivalent to disinvestment and the Government should try to diversify industries and create new employment opportunities. Duty cut flayedHe also came down heavily on the Centre’s decision to reduce the import duty on edible oils and said that the measure would result in sharp fall in the prices of coconut oil and various agricultural products. The Union government was going ahead with several such measures causing considerable hardship to people and raising suspicions among the nations which had stood by India in the Doha round of trade negotiations, he said. The HMS president said his organisation would not support politically motivated agitations such as hartals and bandhs and would cooperate only with issue-based agitations by various sections of the working population for better wages and service conditions. Against SEZThe HMS would oppose the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and also work for better wages for different sections of the working class, Mr. Thomas said.
