252 villages get basic facilities

NAGAPATTINAM: Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan on Saturday said 252 villages in the district were provided with basic amenities such as protected drinking water supply and sanitation under the Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam last year.
Inaugurating a training programme for village panchayat presidents on continuing education programme in rural areas, he said the government accorded priority for providing education in rural areas to increase the literacy percentage in the State.
The government was spending Rs.20 lakh for providing basic amenities in each village under the Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam.
The remaining village panchayats out of a total 434 would be covered this year.
Mr. Mathivanan said 947 persons had been appointed in the district for providing basic education to increase the literacy rate in 942 centres.
As many as 2.18 lakh persons, who benefited by the Arivoli Thittam, were now able to read and write in Tamil.
Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar, who presided over the function, said the success of the literacy programme depended on the efforts of the village panchayat presidents and members.
A number of panchayat presidents had volunteered for special service to increase the literacy rate in the district, he added.
