ARAKKONAM: Minister of State for Railways R. Velu inaugurated e-ticketing and automated teller machines at the Arakkonam, Ambur, Chengalpattu, Tambaram, Tiruttani and Tiruvallur stations, and the ATM at the Kancheepuram station on Saturday.
At a function organised by Indian Bank at the Arakkonam station, he said the Railways increased its profits without hiking the passenger fare or freight charges by maximising the use of resources: increasing the passenger capacity of trains and the freight volume and introducing more trains. The United Progressive Alliance Government, he said, had produced five Railway Budgets without increasing the fares.
Rs. 4,000-crore plan
To eliminate the need for manual removal of human waste from tracks, the Railways had worked out a proposal for scientific disposal of faeces from train toilets. The plan, to be carried out over the next five years, would cost around Rs.4, 000 crore, he said. The Railways was looking at various options for accomplishing the task, including the processing of waste on trains and in stations.
M.S. Sundara Rajan, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Bank, and S.K. Gupta, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Chennai Division, took part in the function.
M. Kathiresan, Circle Head, Indian Bank, Vellore, spoke.
Later Mr. Sundara Rajan told reporters Indian Bank was the first in the country to provide e-ticketing facility to its customers.
Beginning with the opening of a kiosk featuring e-ticketing and ATM at the Egmore station in December, the bank had set up kiosks with ATM at 24 stations in Tamil Nadu, six each in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, five in Uttar Pradesh, three in Delhi, two each in West Bengal and Haryana and one each in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Puducherry. Of these kiosks, 34 offered e-ticketing, too.
