KOLKATA: West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi, who is also the Chancellor of the Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), Shibpur, in Howrah, “is saddened” to have learnt that some students were injured in campus violence there over the past few days. “He is deeply concerned about the situation and calls upon all concerned to restore normalcy on the campus so that the BESU can play its expected role as a national level institution. In this, the students have a special role to play,” said a press released issued from Raj Bhavan here on Saturday. There was trouble involving two groups of students of the institute on March 19 and stray incidents of violence continued forcing the authorities to call in the police and have the hostels vacated. Students were allowed in the hostel a few days later. Mr. Gandhi met groups of students recently and also had an interaction with the Vice Chancellor, BESU. “It is imperative that those not connected with the university as students, staff or faculty should refrain from complicating matters by any provocative or divisive action,” the release said, adding that the Governor welcomed the setting up of a one-member committee to look into the situation and “to suggest short, medium and long-term measures to alleviate the situation.”
