CHANDIGARH: The Haryana Government has decided to confer the “Bhim Award”, the highest sports award in the State, on a physically challenged sportsperson also. This raises the total number of awardees to six from this year. Announcing the names of the awardees for 2007-08, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Saturday that Girraj Singh of village and post office Alipur in Faridabad district had been selected under the “physically challenged sportsperson” category. He said the decision was taken to boost the morale of the physically challenged persons and encourage them to join the mainstream. The other award winners are Vijender Singh for Boxing, Manoj Kumar for Shooting, Bhupinder Singh for Athletics, Joydeep Kaur for Hockey and Meena Kumari for Wresting. Mr. Hooda said each recipient would get Rs.1lakh in cash, an idol of Bhim, a scroll, a blazer and a tie or scarf. Sports promotionHe said the State Government was giving special thrust to the promotion of sports, especially in rural areas. Sports stadiums were being constructed, the diet money of the sportspersons had been doubled and many sports nurseries had been set up to groom the budding players.
