Bhubaneswar: Demanding immediate withdrawal of the new National Mineral Policy (NMP), BJD and BJP MLAs on Saturday staged a dharna terming the policy as a tool to promote the interests of multinational companies. The ruling coalition MLAs squatted near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue inside the Assembly premises and raised slogans against the UPA Government at the Centre and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, alleging that the NMP would lead to plunder of natural resources from mineral rich states like Orissa. Describing the NMP-2008 as ‘heavily influenced’ by the international mining lobby, they said it would benefit foreign companies without serving India’s national interest. They accused the Centre of violating the federal character of Indian democracy by ignoring views of state governments before formulating a national policy.– PTI
