Staff Reporter

The intake of students for the course will be 100

Candidates will have to take an admission test

BANGALORE: The Academic Council of Bangalore University on Saturday accorded approval to the Regional Institute of English, South India, to offer Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in English with an intake of 100 students from the academic year 2007-08.

The Academic Council approved the modified admission regulations, scheme of examination and syllabus furnished by the Dean, Faculty of Education.

Of the 100 seats, 16 each will be reserved for five member-States – Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh, while the rest will be offered to candidates from other States.

Besides fulfilling the eligibility criteria of securing at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate either in B.A., or B.Sc., as specified for any B.Ed., course by the National Council for Teacher Education, a candidate seeking admission to B.Ed., (English) should have scored at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate in B.A (optional English) or 55 per cent marks in English in other degree programmes.

A five per cent relaxation is offered to candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

The RIE will admit candidates found suitable by the screening committee after conducting an admission test on the lines of the Common Entrance Test of the Karnataka Examination Authority. The course will be under semester scheme.

Cultural studies

Presiding over the council meeting, Vice-Chancellor H.A. Ranganath ordered constitution of a multi-disciplinary Academic Advisory Committee to recommend institution of a course (either undergraduate or postgraduate) in cultural studies. The council also approved an amendment to Ph.D. regulations 2005 with regard to eligibility of guides.

Regulation 5.1 (b) prescribes that only a full-time teacher having at least five years’ post-doctoral experience was eligible to become a guide.

Teaching of three core papers — Indian Constitution, Computer Fundamentals and Environmental Studies — at the undergraduate level in the university was approved by the council.
