KOLKATA: Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu on Saturday watched the telecast of the inaugural session of the six-day CPI(M) Congress at his Salt Lake residence here. He is not attending the Coimbatore meet on health grounds. “It is not enough being just a member of the party. There is need to study the tenets of Marxism and understand the party’s ideology rooted in Marxism, its organisational structure, and the direction it pursues,” he told some visiting members of the electronic media. Mr. Basu also underlined the need to extend the reach of the CPI(M). He said an independent foreign policy was required. “We want an independent foreign policy and we are against the country becoming a puppet of the U.S.,” he said.
