Award for social justice conferred

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Voice of Dalit Forum on Friday conferred the ‘Award for Social Justice’ and the ‘Human Rights Health Award’ on Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Anbumani Ramadoss.

Buta Singh, Chairman, National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), said that in the past 20 years, members of the Scheduled Castes were denied rights. Dr. Anbumani fought several communal forces in the department to get reservation for the SCs in medical education, both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Thol. Thirumavalavan of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi said many non-Dalit political leaders feared that if they supported the cause of the Dalits, they had to incur the wrath of the others, and it would affect their vote-bank. In an attempt to creating unity between the Dalits and Vanniyars, Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss erected Dr. Ambedkar’s statues at various places in northern Tamil Nadu despite opposition.

D. Yasodha, MLA, said that earlier the SCs/STs had to fight for their rights. But now, Dr. Anbumani had obtained reservation in medical education, without the people having to resort to agitation.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Anbumani appealed to the Dalit and Vanniyar leaders to come together, which would help in attaining the status of giving rights to others from the present position of struggling to secure their (Vanniyars and SC/STs) rights.

Talking about the AIIMS issue, Dr. Anbumani said SC/ST students used to complain to him about the ill treatment meted out to them. The plight of the students prompted him to take up the issue at the highest level, he said.

Steps would be taken to introduce reservation system in the private sector.

The Government should introduce reservation in the judiciary to achieve the rights of poor and down trodden, he said.
