Musical treat in Kozhikode

A treat: Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, playback singer Karthik and Bollywood singer Shaan performed in Kozhikode on Saturday.

It was Saturday night music fever in Kozhikode. The music lovers of the city never had it so good, as three top notch musicians gave excellent performances, roughly at the same time.

While Bollywood singer Shaan sang before the largest audience at the Corporation Stadium in the Idea India Rocks series, Karthik, one of the finest young playback singers in South India, entertained a lively crowd on the NIT-C campus as part of the Ra gam festival.

One of a kind

Both the shows rocked, but it was music from almost another world when the legendary Pandit Shivkumar Sharma presented a santoor recital at Sana Auditorium, near Govt. Medical College. Rarely was a music lover faced with such difficult choices as on Saturday night. Not surprisingly, most people opted for Shaan. He sang many of his Bollywood hits, including “Jab se tere…” (‘Sawariya’), the song that fetched him his second successive Filmfare award recently.

He received the loudest cheers for “Chand sifarish…(’Fanaa’), which had given him his first Filmfare award, though. He also sang chart-toppers like “Om shanti om…” (‘Om Shanti Om’), “Main hoon Don…” (Don), “Dus bahane…” (‘Dus’) and “Tanha dil…” (from his pop album, ‘Tanha Dil’).

There was a sweet cameo from Sumedha, a finalist at Saregamapa on Zee TV. The young singer was particularly impressive with her rendition of “Chupke se…” (’Saathiyan’). Local girl, Rinsha, sprung a surprise when she overcame early jitters to come up with a decent rendering of “Crazy kiya re…” (‘Dhoom 2’).

Sinov, who sang “Tu hi meri shab hai…” (‘Gangster’), was impressive too. The duo was selected from Kozhikode to audition for Saregamapa.

Karthik, a huge hit

The crowd may have been a lot smaller at NIT-C, for the capacity was just 4,000, but they made Karthik’s concert a memorable one, singing along with him virtually right through the show. He sang Tamil, Hindi and English songs as well as a bit of fusion too. Karthik was given excellent support given by the band led by guitarist Bennet.

Meanwhile, at Sana Auditorium, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was mesmerising a discerning audience with his santoor recital. The great man produced magic yet again with his fingers.
