Doctors play with letters

Who said the medical fraternity, engaged in the mission of treating the sick and the suffering, had no time or talent for literary pursuits? ‘Suvarnajalakam,’ the souvenir brought out on the occasion of the golden jubilee of the Kozhikode Medical College here, showcases to advantage the poetic and literary talents of the medical practitioners.

The editorial team of ‘Suvarnajalakam’ headed by T. Narayanan, a student of the 13th batch of the Medical College, has taken great pains to compile the sleek volume. Offered in a nutshell are the history and other activities of the medical college since its inception in 1957.

Rich tributes have been paid to A.R. Menon, the first health minister of the State and who was instrumental in setting up the college.

Looking back

In articles such as ‘It was the best of times, the worst of times,’ ‘Reminiscences of Beach Hospital,’ ‘The Lingering memories,’ the college alumni go down memory lane. The tastefully included photographs add to the attraction. Alumni have contributed via poetry, articles, reminiscences and tributes to stalwart teachers. In ‘kuthipinte oru varsham, kithapinteyum,’ Dr. Narayanan who was the student editor in 1973 and staff editor in 2002, speaks of his sentiments while going about the job.

M.T. Vasudevan Nair, writer, in an article ‘Sahityam manasinte vathilukal thurakkunnu’ suggests that classes on literary topics be held on a regular basis for medical and engineering students. V. Swarnam the first alumni Principal of the KMC describes the joys and sorrows -- a student unrest included -- of her tenure. ‘Kozhikodinte Chikilsa Parvam’ from P.V. Ramachandran, Director of Medical Education and a student of the 14th batch describes the contribution of the college in the sphere of medicine.

The Principal’s gallery is dedicated to those who had steered the medical college through thick and thin.
