THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Transport Commissioner Ananthakrishnan has stressed the need for a State-level accident-reduction plan based on good driving habits and improvement of road conditions. Speaking after inaugurating a Road Safety Club at Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering here on Saturday, he expressed concern over the high rate of road accidents in Kerala. “Two-wheeler riders constitute the majority of accident victims. Thousands of families have been condemned to a miserable existence after their dear ones were killed or permanently disabled. Yet, accidents are treated lightly. There is an urgent need to adopt good driving habits and improve the condition of roads.” Delivering the keynote address, Managing Director of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation T.P. Senkumar attributed the accident rate to indiscipline among road users. Arrogance coupled with uncivil behaviour on the roads was responsible for most accidents. Steep increase in vehicle population, poor condition of roads and speeding were contributing factors. Presiding over the function, college Principal C.K. Baby said changes in on-road behaviour could be brought about only through a well-researched and planned public education campaign. Executive Director of KSRTC G. Venugopal and State coordinator of the Road Safety Club P.M. Shaji also spoke.
