Puducherry
Young achiever: Seven-year-old R. Shruti on course to her journey of 220 kilometres from Ousteri to Mahabalipuram. PUDUCHERRY: This was no ordinary journey. A seven-year-old girl from Puducherry skated to and fro for 220 km from Ousteri to Mahabalipuram to register her appeal for the release of Sarabjit Singh, lodged in a prison in Pakistan. A student of standard II of Amalorpavam School, R. Shruti has been learning to skate for the last three years. Her father, K. Rajkumar, runs a bakery in Uppalam. “Shruti is also learning yoga. She has won two gold medals at a skating championship in Mumbai in 2006. She also won three bronze medals in another championship in the same year,” Mr. Rajkumar said. In this feat, Shruti’s journey started from Ousteri and drew to a close at Mahabalipuram on Saturday. She returned to Puducherry on Sunday, covering a total of 220 km. She was trained by her father. “She had pain in her legs but completed the task. Our aim is not to set any record but it was only a plea to seek the release of Sarabjit Singh,” he added. The seven-year-old has already planned what she would like to do in the future. “I love to skate. When I grow up, I would like to join the Indian Administrative Service or be part of the Indian Army,” Shruti said.
