PUDUCHERRY: As part of its initiative to involve the general public in preventing and detecting crime, the Police Department has launched a Special Friends of Police scheme. Distributing cards and badges of Special Friends of Police (SFP) to as many as 99 persons, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Saturday appealed to the public to cooperate with the police to improve the law and order situation in the Union Territory. As per the plan, the SFP members would be recruited from within the jurisdiction of each police station to form a team. The team would be entrusted with the task of patrolling their locality, grass roots-level intelligence gathering, besides conducting checks in cinema halls on eve-teasers and black marketers, a manual prepared by the Police Department for the SFP said. The members would also visit the scene of the crime and assist the police in collecting clues. The SFP members would be deployed for traffic and law and order duties during important events. They could also be utilised to organise peace committee meetings during crisis, the manual said. The members would not be allowed to use their title on their visiting cards or display it on nameboards or vehicle number plates, the manual said.
