Taluk status for Banavasi sought

Correspondent

Sirsi: Banavasi Valaya Abhyudaya Samiti has urged the Taluk Redrawing Committee to accord taluk status to Banavasi (now in Sirsi taluk) by merging Jade hobli, some parts of Kuppagadde and Chandragutti hoblis of Soraba taluk, and Dasankoppa and Sugavi hoblis of Sirsi taluk.

In a memorandum submitted to the committee, the samiti has said that if Banavasi is made a taluk it will help in further development of the region. Banavasi region has 72 villages with a population of more than 30,000.

It is one of the most backward regions, and had to be made a taluk to bring in development, the samiti said.

In 1986, a proposal to form Banavasi taluk was submitted to the Hundekar Samiti.
