The scheme launched in 13 districts two years ago

Smart card system to be introduced in six districts

81 lakh people provided works under NREGP

HYDERABAD: Come April 1, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme will be extended to cover all the districts across the State, barring Hyderabad.

The scheme, launched in 13 districts initially two years ago, was extended to six more districts last year. It will now be extended to the rural areas in Krishna, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts covering 19,347 villages in 964 mandals throughout the State.

Rural Development Minister G. Chinna Reddy who reviewed the progress of the scheme on Sunday announced that smartcard system for transparency in payment of wages to workers would be introduced in six districts. Smartcards that were issued on a pilot basis in six mandals of Warangal and two mandals of Karimnagar yielded fruitful results and, therefore, it was decided to extend the project to other districts.

As many as 81 lakh people were provided works under the NREGP so far generating 25.39 crore mandays and it was decided to provide 100 days employment to at least four lakh families in the coming days.

In addition, social audit had been conducted in several villages to bring out the lapses if any, and action had been initiated against officials concerned.

Accordingly, 900 field assistants, 90 technical assistants, 12 computer operators and nine MPOs had been removed from duties while 11 Mandal Parishad Development Officers had been suspended, he added.
