BANGALORE: The Parisara Premigala Okkoota has urged political parties not to use plastic during the campaign for the coming elections to the State Assembly. Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, V. Thyagaraj, president of the okkoota, said that tonnes of plastic buntings and posters used during elections and political rallies and congregations pose a threat to the environment. It will not only spoil the beauty of the city but will also pose health problems. He said that politicians contesting elections should know more about the ill-effects of plastic and ensure that they campaign without using plastic materials. DamageMr. Thyagaraj said that plastic sheets carried by breeze end up in rivers, tanks and wells. They sink to the bottom of the water body and block groundwater sources. He said that chemicals used to colour the plastic material dissolve in water poisoning the water body. He urged the health officials to be on guard and punish the parties using plastic materials and penalise them with fine.
