Private partnership in education welcomed

Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL: The Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Arjun Singh, on Sunday advocated the importance of autonomous colleges. He welcomed the idea of private partnership in the sphere of education saying that the available resources were not keeping pace with the expansion in the area.

The HRD Minister was addressing media-persons in the State capital on Sunday afternoon. He said that education reforms were necessary and it was important to keep up with the changing times. Mr. Singh said that the performance on the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan front (universalisation of elementary education) was being evaluated. There has been some laxity in the implementation of this programme in few big States like Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, though the results were encouraging in the rest of the country, he said.

Talking about the state of Madhya Pradesh under the Bharatiya Janata Party led Government, Mr. Singh said that it was not a very healthy situation. He expressed the hope that the Congress party would make up for all the shortcomings.

On the issue of fees charged by technical colleges, the HRD Minister said that there should be provisions to enable students from poor economic background, cutting across caste and religion , to avail education facilities in these colleges.

Regarding alleged irregularities in Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology in the State capital, Mr. Singh said that the Government had accepted the M.N. Buch report and necessary action was being taken.

Mr. Singh also said that the deadline for setting up the proposed Indian Institute of Science and Central University here, was slated to come up under the Eleventh Five-year Plan.

Mr. Singh also expressed a need to reform civil services as they were linked directly to the people.
