Garbage clearance in Pulianthope to be privatised

Staff Reporter

Micro plan for operations reviewed

Corporation workers to be transferred to zones of their choice

Time table of operations to be given to the zone’s councillors

Chennai: Private firm Neel Metal Fanalca (NMF) will take over garbage clearance operations from the Chennai Corporation in the Pulianthope zone from April 1.

On Saturday, a Corporation team, led by Mayor M. Subramanian and Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni, visited the NMF depot at Royapettah to review the micro plan for operations. Councillors from the zone were present. In August 2007, NMF took charge of garbage clearance operations in Ice House, Kodambakkam and Adyar zones. The Chennai Corporation did not hand over the Pulianthope zone, which was included in the agreement with NMF, as the latter did not have adequate equipment and manpower.

Said Mr. Subramanian: “We held series of meetings with the firm to prevent recurrence of last time’s experience, when garbage was left on the streets. Councillors have also offered their suggestions to improve the services.”

A press release from the company stated that about 400 field staff, including sweepers, helpers, vehicle drivers and supervisors, had been assigned to the Pulianthope zone, and another 100 kept in reserve. Four compactors, 33 mini-trucks and two hook loader trucks would operate in the zone on a daily basis.

About 400 bins would be placed at various points. The time table of operations in each ward would be given to the zone’s councillors. Mr. Lakhoni said Corporation workers would continue to work in the zone for a month to ensure a smooth transition. The Corporation’s 1,045 sanitary workers serving the zone would then be transferred to other zones or departments.

The Mayor added that the workers would be shifted to zones of their choice.
