THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman M.S. Kumar has accused the Union government of adopting “a policy intended to create famine conditions in Kerala.” At a press conference here on Sunday, he said that the Centre had reduced the State’s quota of ration rice yet again, even as the price of rice was shooting up. The Congress government in Andhra Pradesh also had imposed curbs on supply of rice from there to Kerala, he said. He said that the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance had been “treating Kerala with enmity” right from the day it came to power at the CentreThe latest decision on quota reduction came almost as a direct response to demonstrations conducted in New Delhi by the Members of Parliament from Kerala, urging the Centre to increase the quota. The Chief Minister and other Ministers from the State too had been meeting the Union Minister to press for more rice supply to the State, he said. Mr. Kumar alleged that the Union government was discriminating against the States where the Congress was not wielding power. He asked whether the Left Democratic Front in Kerala would join hands with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in fighting this ‘discrimination.’
