CHENNAI: Health and Family Welfare Minister M.R.K. Paneerselvam on Thursday urged gynaecologists and obstetricians to participate in the Varummun Kappom Scheme and serve people in rural areas.

Speaking after inaugurating an auditorium of The Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Southern India (OGSSI) on the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology campus in Egmore here, he said there was a need for more specialised healthcare in the villages.

A total of 57 lakh people had been covered under the scheme through 5,700 camps, he said, adding that more 2,300 more such camps would be conducted. He said there was a considerable increase in the number of births at Government Hospitals and attributed this to better facilities and increased allocation of funds.

When compared to last year there were 70,000 more births, he added.

Minister for Social Welfare Poongothai Aladi Aruna said if gynaecologists said a definite no to sex determination tests, it would help bring down the rate of female foeticide cases considerably.

She said the association should provide training village health nurses, which would in turn help reach out to the rural masses.

Association office-bearers Hepzibah Kirubamani, president, Jaishree Gajaraj, vice-president, R. Premalatha, honorary treasurer and Vijayalakshmi Seshadri, honorary secretary participated. Senior members of the association B. Palaniappan and Senthamilselvi were felicitated.
