“Recent revision in property taxes is on higher side”
Staff Reporter
MADURAI: The recent revision in property taxes by the State Government was on the higher side.
That the revision was being carried out after a gap of 10 years was “not acceptable,” the Madurai Consumer Protection Centre has said.
The State Government has stipulated that the revision would not exceed 25 per cent for residential buildings, 100 per cent for industrial buildings and 150 per cent for commercial buildings.
The guidelines are scheduled to come into effect from Tuesday.
Resolutions to the effect were adopted at the organisation’s executive committee meeting held here recently.
It expressed hope that the increase would not exceed 5 per cent, as was done by a former Corporation Commissioner.
The organisation also resolved to urge the Collector to ensure that ration shops had adequate stock of all the requisite commodities on all days.
Stating that the number of police stations was inadequate in the wake of recent instances of crimes in the city, the association requested the Chief Minister to increase the strength of police personnel in the district.
It also noted that a recent murder was committed close to a spot where a police outpost used to function and was subsequently closed owing to shortage of manpower.
The association also called upon the Transport Minister to clear the air regarding the confusion of bus fare in the wake of introduction of buses with ‘new colours.’
Association president, N. S. Ponniah, General Secretary G. Munisamy, and other office-bearers took part.
