KOLLAM: Kerala High Court Judge K.P. Balachandran has said that the role of voluntary organisations in the field of social service has assumed importance owing to the challenges posed by globalisation. He was inaugurating the Educational and Charitable Trust of the Rotary Club of Greater Kollam here on Sunday. Mr. Balachandran said the most visible feature of globalisation was the diminishing role of the State, specifically in the services sector. Free enterprise and survival of the fittest had come to stay, leading to unforeseen changes in the social and economic fabric of society. Social and economic disparities were on the rise. Hence, focus on charity, social service and cooperation had to be re-established, with conscious effort on the part of voluntary organisations. He said voluntary organisations had the potential and capacity to effect transformation in society. Mr. Balachandran said the areas where service organisations could play a major role were the care of the elderly and the mentally and the physically challenged. He, however, expressed concern over many such initiatives being abandoned halfway. He exhorted the voluntary organisations to come out with reorientation programmes for the youth and children. K. Udayakumar, former Rotary governor and former Principal of S.N. College, distributed the maiden financial aid of the trust to four students. Trust office-bearers H. Raju, P.R. Premachandran, N. Sivaraman Nair, Palazhi Bhaskaran and Kaveri Ramachandran were present.
