Steps to prevent flooding of low-lying areas sought

Staff Reporter

Need for survey to formulate master plan stressed

Nagercoil: The Conservation of Nature Trust here has urged the Government to take steps to prevent the flooding of low-lying areas in and around Nagercoil municipal limits.

The chairman of the forum, R.S. Lal Mohan has said that there were about 60 tanks, small and big, within the periphery of the town The municipality, the district administration and individuals filled most of the tanks unwisely. After the merger of Kanyakumari district with Tamil Nadu, officers who viewed these areas as wastelands converted them into bus stands, shopping complexes, housing sites and even marriage halls. This has resulted in water scarcity in summer and flood during rainy seasons.

Now, there are only one or two tanks and they are also polluted and encroached. The water from the highlands like Vetturnimadam, collectorate area and high level water tank areas will flow naturally to the low lying areas like Chettikulam, Vadiveeswaram, Meenakshipuram, W.C.C. Road and Dennison Street. These highlands were interrupted by tanks while serving as a cushion to receive the rainwater. Further there were large natural canals like odai to receive storm water during rainy seasons. If these tanks were filled, the rainwater would not flood areas like Kottar and cause havoc. With the construction of shopping complexes and marriage halls, the rainwater reached Kottar.

Another tank namely Pochathankulam was also allotted for housing sites by the Nagercoil municipality under the scheme of Government to offer patta to the people. On one side the Government was trying to remove encroachments from the tanks and on the other hand trying to give pattas to the people to strengthen their vote bank.

Hence the Conservation of Nature Trust here has demanded the Government conduct a detailed survey so that a master plan could be formulated to prevent flooding. Moreover one of the important suggestions to prevent the flood was to remove encroachments in odai poromboke. The officials should undertake periodic check-up so that encroachments could be removed to ensure free flow of rainwater, said Mr.Lal Mohan.
