“Disburse relief to salt pan owners on a war-footing”

Tuticorin: The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Tuticorin, has urged the Department of Salt to take initiative to disburse relief on a war-footing to salt pan owners, who suffered heavy losses in the recent rain that lashed the district.

In a memorandum submitted to V.V. Laxmi, Assistant Salt Commissioner, here on Saturday, the Chamber secretary, D.R. Kodeeswaran, said that compensation should be allocated at a rate of Rs.10,000 per acre to enable the entrepreneurs to resume production at the earliest.

The Chamber wanted the authorities concerned to simplify the procedures followed for analysing the salt samples and for issuing clearance certificate for exports, to give an impetus to exports from the country. Likewise, the department should upgrade its office here to analyse salt samples at a low cost and in short period. The operational area of the mobile salt testing laboratory here should be widened.

The department should identify new locations to increase area coverage of salt pans thereby meet the growing demands for edible and industrial salts in domestic market comfortably.

Mr. Kodeeswaran had reiterated the demand to exclude salt from the purview of the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, to stop harassment of salt manufacturers.

According to him, adulteration of salt seldom takes place considering that the produce remains one of the cheapest edible items.
