Land of grapes, windmills and scenic mountains

Kadayanallur, with an area of 52.25 sq. km., is the third largest town and a Grade II municipality in Tirunelveli district. The name Kadayanallur derived from ‘Kadayaleeswara,’ the name of the presiding deity of Kadayaleeswarar Temple. It is located on the foothills of Western Ghats and close to Tenkasi and Courtallam.

It is also known for its paddy fields, coconut groves and orchards, thanks to the recently launched National Horticulture Mission. Even before the launch of NHM in 2005, grape cultivation was a major source of revenue for the Kadayanallur farmers, blessed with abundant water resources and fertile soil.

Though farming is still the prime income generation activity of Kadayanallur, a good number people from this region are now working abroad, particularly in the Middle East, ensuring huge flow of foreign exchange into the district.

The population of the Kadayanallur in 1951 was 38,060 and it increased to 75,612, according to the 2001 Census. However, successive governments failed to ensure industrial investment in this region like agro-based industries to provide employment to the ever-increasing population though production of agricultural and horticultural production, especially mango, amla and vegetables is high.

In this industrially backward town, handloom clothes, matches, fibre and mud pots are being manufactured. Of late, windmills are coming up in the areas around and east of Kadayanallur as this area is advantageously situated on the windy stretch originating from Ariyankaavu Pass.

Sri Anjaneya Temple at Krishnapuram near Kadayanallur and the Masood Thaika (dhargah) draw a huge crowd of devotees right through the year.
